the conversation chris begins and adam responds to at around 36:00 is deeply resonate with me as an early 20-something with a wanting to learn about WHY the classics are classics and how that shapes current cinema
39:30 This section here is the best thing I've heard said on the Big Picture podcast. You can't just eat soup and claim to be a foodie. Go to the buffet. Try a bit of everything and treat it fairly and seriously.
Adam's sense of humor is so dry that I only got it like 5 appearances ago and now am convinced he's one of the funniest people on earth
I love this discussion!! Sean' points about critics becoming out of sync with the mainstream was very thoughtful. I always enjoy Adam on this pod
This podcast gets me so fired up for movies. Fucking love it.
Watching dune in imax was my highlight of the year in cinemas.
Boys are cooking on this ep
Boys were sharp as usual! Good to hear Amanda again!
Some really fantastic picks here. I most agree with Adam's picks because our tastes align, but the reason I love this specific podcast's Top Five is because Adam, Chris, Amanda, and Sean have such interesting and differing views of cinema that inevitably most of the great films of the year get mentioned during this one. And you know when a film comes up 2 or 3 times it's really special (a la Nickel Boys, Brutalist, etc).
As a 37 year old non-swiftie but a lover of Broadway since I was a child, I think I understand the hype and frustration around Wicked getting so much acclaim. I am so pumped to see it win, but maybe purely because it’s nostalgia and brings me back to being 17 and blasting it for all of my freshmen dorm roommates. I also cannot fathom how anyone can enjoy TS’s music at all, or how she gets so much acclaim for doing something that I don’t fully appreciate. Being on the other side of this argument has been helpful in my perspective of the “cult” of personality around songs that resonate with us at different times in our lives.
Always love to see Adam on the pod
I’m glad someone picked ‘Red Room’ on their top 5 list! Great film!!
Amanda being the one to have The Bikeriders in her top 5 Certified hell yeah moment
Great to hear from Amanda again!
Everything you guys discussed about films without a wide release, or foreign releases, or older classics is precisely why I had a blast with early Netflix, when it was only a disc service. They pretty much had anything available on DVD, with very few films made unavailable due to some sort of rights exclusivity. As a result, I discovered movies I don't think I ever would have seen, and even stumbled upon a couple of outstanding films that I never would have heard of.
I too thought Civil War was opportunistic and I was especially uncomfortable with a Brit making it; but the way it was done eliminated all those concerns for me. My lasting memory of the film is just seeing what wartime in present day America might look like and compared to the way we have seen wartime in places like Vietnam in the past. And that POV was absolutely brilliant for someone like me who grew up in working class St Louis and thus has never dealt with those types of traumas/atrocities before. And my god, that 20 or so minute stretch of scenes that goes from fun thriller then quickly to viscera,l horrific stuff and finally ending with deeply sad beauty with that Sturgill Simpson needle drop. It has moved me to tears all 3 or 4 times I've either watched in full or caught it on HBO. That stretch and especially ending combination of visuals and music is SPECIAL special.
I just have to say: Out of everyone on the panel, having my own top 5 most closely aligning with Amanda's wasn't on my bingo card for this year. And if we measured things just by how often they're mentioned during the pod, then The Beekeeper has to be on the definitive top 5 list somewhere, right? I for one unironically enjoyed it.
Chris looks like the Elf on the shelf going through his blue phase 😂
34:40 As a 22 year old, Chris absolutely nails this take.
