Just for the correct fact:
Wearing white ain't compulsory. Its mostly worn by those who can afford to ruin a perfectly new white attire. Usually and traditionally we are supposed to wear the old clothes which we would just want to give up after the festival.

Also, the 'bonfire' we do not sing and dance around it on Holi (that's done on Lohri which falls on 13th January) the Holi 'bonfire' is auspicious and is worshipped by women, before setting it on fire and it has a very popular legend which marks the occasion of Holi . The story of Prahlaad, his father and the King - Hrinakashpu and Prahlad' aunt & Hrisnakashpu's sister - Holika.
The brief of the story is, The King wanted everybody in his reign to worship himself and no other, while his very own son was a firm believer of 1 of the Trinity Gods - Lord Vishnu.
So after a lot of efforts Hrinakashpu thought that he would kill his son, so he asked his sister Holika (who had a boon, that she would not burn no matter what) to make Prahlad sit in her lap and then he would set them on fire.
However, Prahlad kept on meditating and kept repeating Lord Vishnu's name and the miracle happened, Holika burnt, while Prahlad came out fine.

Which proves the victory of good over evil.
FYI: The Hrinakashpu who also had a boon that no man or animal, could kill Him, neither in day, nor at night, neither inside nor outside, neither in the sky, nor on the ground, by no weapon. So he was killed by Lord Vishnu's Narsimha Avtar (a mix of human and lion), which killed him in the evening on the threshold of the door, placing him on his thigh, with his bare wolverine like nails

Im from Trinidad, here we call Holi as Phagwa. We celebrated it today with singing, dances and throwing the coloured powder at each other (here we call it abir, didn't know it's also called gulal). My skin is still stained from the colours after I've bathed. It's really fun.
