The mass urbanization shown in the first photo reminds me of the Malvina Renolds song, "Little Boxes." And they're all made out of ticky-tacky, and they all look the same."

In the 1863 photo of the capitol under construction, the white specks on the landscape in front of it are US Army "dog tents:" the initial name for "pup tents." 

I commuted on the DC Metro for many years while working for Xerox as a copier tech.
