Don Juan, symphonic poem for large orchestra, opus 20 (1888), by Richard Strauss, was performed for the first time on November 11, 1889, in Weimar, with the composer himself conducting the orchestra. In this work, Strauss sought to musically express the characteristics of the dramatic poem Don Juan by Nicolaus Lenau, from which we provide a prose translation of the main passages:

"I wanted to explore the enchanted and infinite world of beauty and lose myself in the irresistible seduction of women, living in a whirlwind of pleasure and dying with the last kiss upon my lips. My love transformed every time I touched the lips of a new woman. I no longer feel the slightest remorse. Just as every beauty is unique, so is the love that every woman desires. Always moving forward toward new conquests, as long as blood runs through my veins with the fire of youth... But now, the storm has subsided. All hope has vanished, all desire has been calmed. The flame flickers only faintly. Perhaps it was the lightning from the heights that I scorned which struck me. The world has become empty and cold."

Strauss' music does not depict a Don Juan solely as a pleasure-seeker but also gives shape and expression to the deepest human emotions. The composition is built in a free sonata form combined with a rondo form. The work ends with these two lines from Lenau's poem:

"Und plötzlich ward die Welt mir wüst umnachtet… und kalt und dunkel ward es auf dem Herd."
(And suddenly the world around me became desolate and surrounded by night… the hearth grew cold and dark.)
