Arizona Horizon | February 12, 2025 | Full episode
Today on Arizona Horizon, we'll talk about spring training, cancer rates among younger women, and voting records in Congress.
Spring training kicks off February 20th and lasts until March 25th. There are 15 MLB squads that play in Arizona, including the Diamondbacks. In 2023, the 2023 Cactus League season generated an estimated $710.2 million in economic impact for Arizona, including $418.5 million for Arizona's gross domestic product. Bridget Binsbacher, executive director of the Arizona Cactus League Baseball Association joins us with more.
The American Cancer Society recently reported that more Americans are surviving cancer, but the disease is striking young and middle-aged adults and women more frequently. The study also shows Black and Native Americans are dying of some cancers at rates two to three times higher than those among white Americans. These trends represent a marked change for an illness that has long been considered a disease of aging, and which used to affect far more men than women. The shifts reflect declines in smoking-related cancers and prostate cancer among older men and a disconcerting rise in cancer in people born since the 1950s. Women are also being diagnosed at younger ages. Rick J. Bold, M.D., M.B.A. of Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center explains.
Are lawmakers capitulating to President Trump? Senator Bill Cassidy (R) Louisiana is a doctor, firmly for vaccines, and was against RFK Jr. quite publicly. But, after talks with VP J.D. Vance and also assurances from Kennedy that he would not undermine the public's belief in vaccines, he voted for him. Cassidy happens to be up for re-election. Several other GOP members have done the same. Arizona Senators Kelly and Gallego both have voted for certain Trump-backed issues, and their constituents are not happy. Will we see more of this? Chuck Coughlin of HighGround, LLC and Karl Gentles of Gentles PR join us to discuss.
