Civil service headcount 'will go down' as government transitions to digital, minister says
Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has told Sky News that he's "almost certain" that the civil service headcount will go down as the government moves to increased use of AI.
He says a report from his department shows "about half of all transactions carried out by the government are analogue", and that "this is not the way we should be running a country". He suggests there could be "up to £45 billion in savings" for the government if they were to start using AI.
When asked about the proposed welfare cuts, Mr Kyle says "we're the Labour Party, we care about the dignity of work". He says he understands that "people want to work if they are able to work", but goes on to say there's "nothing wrong with trying to reduce the welfare bill".
