Synopsis | Dangerous Game (2022)
Rarely, if ever, has the non-attendance of a player at a major tennis tournament been so noticeable or worrying. At the Australian Open in Melbourne in 2022, Novak Djokovic wasn't the only missing champion. Much more sinister was the absence of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai. Concern about her wellbeing was first raised in November last year when she disappeared almost immediately after publicly accusing a Communist Party leader of sexually assaulting her. Three weeks later, following a worldwide outcry about her safety, she just as mysteriously re-emerged. Peng Shuai has now been seen at several carefully staged-managed events, including the Winter Olympics in Beijing, but as Tom Steinfort reports, her reappearance has done little to convince the world she's okay.
