Tour de Turtles 2018 - Lucaya
Atlantis has partnered with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to bring awareness to the issues sea turtles face by sponsoring a leatherback turtle in the 2018 Tour De Turtles.
Tour De Turtles follows the migration of sea turtles, representing different species, from their nesting beaches to their foraging grounds. Thirteen turtles will race, each to raise awareness for a different cause. Lucaya is swimming to promote the reduction of entanglement in commercial fisherman’s nets. Satellite transmitters are attached to each turtle to track the distance traveled and the turtle that travels the furthest is the winner.
ABOUT OUR TURTLE LUCAYA
Lucaya is an adult female leatherback sea turtle encountered nesting on May 27, 2018, on Soropta Beach, Panama. She measured 151.5 cm in curved carapace (shell) length and 108.4 cm curved carapace width. We do not know exactly how many eggs she laid, but it’s always a safe bet to say almost 100.
When you help sponsor Lucaya in the 2018 Tour de Turtles Marathon, you also help reduce the many threats posed to sea turtles by entanglement in commercial trawler nets. Race along with Lucaya and learn more at tourdeturtles.org.
Contributions to Tour de Turtles through the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation, a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Code, are deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
