5 things to remember when standing up for your youth soccer player
Ever wondered how to talk with your youth soccer coaches?
You want to speak for your player without coming across as the pushy parent.
I get it.
🤔
After working with multiple players, clubs, and coaches over the years, here five things you should know before talking to your players’ coach:
1️⃣ Going to Coach about Playing time.
Yes, everyone wants to play. . Instead of asking “why aren’t they playing?” ask “Is there something they can do to earn more playing time?” Ensure your player comes with you( even better, have them ask!)
2️⃣ No matter how you feel about the coach, Don’t allow your personal feelings to spill out in the car ride.
One comment is all it takes! Do not allow personal feelings to get in the way. They will parrot it back to teammates and undermine a coach’s authority.
.
3️⃣ Instead of paying for more private training sessions, encourage your player to train independently!
Too many times, parents throw their players into sessions to pique their interest in soccer. Private training will not do it!
Instead, go out and play with them themselves. Set challenges for them to meet on their own. Leave little soccer balls around the house and have them dribble around obstacles.
4️⃣ Make it fun
Whether we realize it or not, too many players leave the game early. Their number one reason is: the parent’s behavior. This is easily fixable. Make sure to realize this is their journey, and tell them you love watching them play!
5️⃣ Build better people
My favorite quote is from John Wooden: “You use basketball, don’t have basketball use you.”
It is the same for soccer! No matter how you want this turn out( HS star, College athlete, Pro baller), I guarantee you want your player to be an even better person.
it takes time and consistency.
Keep emphasizing their character. Ultimately, that is what they will remember long after the final whistle.
Do you agree? Let me know what you would add to this list! 💪🤝
