There are lots of reasons I think the benefits of more steps might keep you alive:
The ability to walk that much may suggest an overall higher level of physical capacity.
The ability to walk that much may suggest higher muscle mass.
The ability to walk that much may suggest higher bone density.
The ability to walk that much may suggest better overall health.
And there’s a lot more, but why does it plateau at about 8000 steps?
My guess is that we don’t have lots of data on people who walk more than that. Since we don’t, we can’t really make suggestions.
Since these step trackers are baseline in our phones now, I anticipate we’ll have more data in the coming years.
My suggestion? Almost no matter where you are on the step spectrum, “a few more” every day is probably a good idea.
I don’t need you going from 50 to 8000 overnight. Seems kind of…unreasonable.
But that doesn’t mean an additional 500 every day won’t have tremendous benefits. It will.
Get your steps in.
